Gravity causes the movement. The Earth is a cooling rock, cracked into plates - The heavy ocean floor gets cold, it gets dense.
The edge gets grabbed by gravity.
Down into the hot, gooey (mantle) it goes - science calls this (slab pull).
The continents. They are just corks bobbing in the wake - They do not sink because they are light.
