@yantosan

They shift us from egocentric (body-centered) navigation to allocentric (map-centered) understanding, weaken our natural sense of direction, and reduce the formation of detailed cognitive maps. People now tend to follow turn-by-turn instructions rather than building a relational mental model of space. This leads to shallower spatial knowledge, poorer wayfinding when GPS fails, and a more fragmented sense of place.At the same time, digital maps greatly expand our functional spatial range, enable instant global awareness, and make complex environments accessible.In short: we navigate farther and faster, but understand space more superficially.https://www.nature.com/articles/s41562-020-00966-1 https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/how-gps-is-changing-our-minds/ https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2021/jul/11/how-google-maps-is-changing-our-sense-of-place
