Mark Zuckerberg is learning a lesson that should have been obvious. When you track every keystroke, fire 8,000 people, and tell the survivors they have no choice but to train the AI that will replace them, your employees might start to resent you.
The tracking software called MCI logs mouse movements, click locations, and periodic screenshots on work computers. There is no opt out. CTO Andrew Bosworth told workers "you can be angry or shocked, but there is no choice in the matter." Employees posted more than 100 angry emojis. Then they started distributing protest flyers in bathroom stalls and meeting rooms across US offices. The flyers cite the National Labor Relations Act, reminding workers they are legally protected when they organize for better conditions.
The company is about to notify 8,000 people that they are fired. The survivors are watching. And they are not happy about it.
