I've always been a stomach sleeper with one leg bent upwards. Recurring pain moved me to look into healthier sleeping positions. Moving forward I'm going to focus on side sleeping because it feels more natural to me than sleeping on my back and has other benefits - Good breathing airflow - Neck and back alignment - If you have heartburn the left side tends to be better - etc. I'm also going to add a small pillow between my knees to reduce pressure on the hips. https://www.sleepfoundation.org/sleeping-positions

I am a belly sleeper too and my experience has been that this is about flexibility and fitness. If a position is hurting you it means your body isn't adapted and rather misaligned in some way. Lift, swim, run and stretch more. That will solve all your problems.

I most likely have costochondritis. Still waiting for all of the results to come in. My plan is to see if I can strengthen the areas around the ribs once recovered to avoid future flare ups.
