We may need new pronouns sooner than we think — not just in fiction, but in real life. Today, while working with my toy agent, I had to refer to another one. Him? Her? It? 他,她,还是它? None fit. Of course, neutral pronouns already matter deeply for many people — this just feels like another place where language keeps expanding. So I’m borrowing from Diaspora (Greg Egan): ve / vis / ver. The Chinese translation (《离散》, 萧傲然译) even invents a character blending “人” and “它”. A small moment — but it feels like language is already adapting to the minds we’re creating.
