Is it time to retire our community badges (aka the emojis in our display names)? Your success on Farcaster greatly depends on how connected you are to the core of the network. Warpcast’s invisible points (that drive the leaderboard), Open Rank, Neynar Score, and OG FarScore all rely on this core group of users. If you want to be connected to the core, you can’t look spammy. Unfortunately spammers and low value accounts have copied our community badges and it no longer signals community the way it did a year ago. Since our display names no longer show them, they are truly only seen on our profiles. You can no longer scroll the feed and quickly see who hangs out in the same cozy corners as you. When people take the time to look at your profile, you only get a few seconds to convince them you are worth following. They will judge your name, pfp, bio, and your last 10 casts in mere seconds. And if something seems off, they scroll by.

I get what you mean. The badges were cool at first, but now they’ve been overrun by spam accounts. I used to rock badges like 🎩🎭, but after seeing so many farmers using them, I decided to ditch them. Honestly, I made that choice over six months ago.

I’ve updated mine over time. I didn’t really see how much spam was around until the labels went public. @geoffgolberg data has also make me look at this deeper. It seems we are outnumbered by the inauthentic accounts almost 10:1

I totally agree. Recently, I’ve noticed that farming accounts are almost 10 times more common than real accounts. One person can have more than five accounts, all made just for farming. I’ve been seeing this since the beginning of my crypto journey (2018), especially with Telegram farming accounts. Now that Farcaster accounts are free, all you need is an X account to sign up. X accounts are sold cheaply in the marketplace, and for less than $10, you can own dozens of Farcaster accounts by buying X accounts in the marketplace.

There’s so much talk about earning money that I’m afraid it’s going to attract even more of those low value accounts.
