By 2017 I jumped in, turned a few hundred into $10k, and thought I’d never need to work again. Of course, I didn’t sell. By 2021 I felt like a genius again, but instead of cashing out, I just rotated into other coins. Fast forward to 2025: I’m not rich, I’m in debt, my job sucks, and crypto has wrecked my relationship with money. The swings have fried my brain, $500 feels like nothing when you’ve seen $5k disappear in hours. Worst of all, chasing “making it” killed my career drive. I don’t blame crypto, I blame myself. My personality wasn’t built for this. I still hold bags, I’m still in profit, but the stress and regret weigh heavier than the gains. Lesson: don’t romanticize crypto. Work like it’s going to zero. If you make it, good. If not, you’ll still have a life.

I had bitcoin when it was $200 and I didn’t hold any Back in high school, my single mom got sick with Lyme disease and within months went from healthy to barely walking or talking. Living in a high-cost city, I suddenly had to cover about $3K/month at just 16. A normal teen job couldn’t cut it, so I started selling fake IDs through a Chinese dark web site that only accepted Bitcoin. At the time, I thought Bitcoin was just some random Chinese currency. I’d walk 30 minutes to a deli Bitcoin ATM, turn cash into BTC, and fund orders. That hustle carried us through my last two years of high school—paid my mom’s medical bills, kept her going, and got me to college. She’s now almost 50 and healthy. Sadly, I never kept any of that Bitcoin, and only years later did I realize what I’d missed.
