scientific advances continue in a vacuum, but societal wisdom which we have progressively built our modern civilization on since ancient times stalls at first then dramatically regresses. eventually we become collectively socially ill-equipped for the extreme degree of advances we create. this social structure can easily breakdown in 2-3 generations
