Ohrid, North Macedonia — Set on the shores of one of Europe's oldest and deepest lakes, Ohrid is sometimes called the (Jerusalem of the Balkans) — it once had 365 churches, one for every day of the year. In the 9th century, Saints Cyril and Methodius developed the Glagolitic alphabet here, the forerunner of the Cyrillic script used across the Slavic world today. Both the city and the lake are UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
