Although the Trump administration established a strategic bitcoin reserve through an executive order on March 7, it is legally limited to expanding this reserve through budget-neutral strategies or asset forfeitures. Senator Cynthia Lummis, who introduced related legislation in July 2024, proposed converting a portion of the Treasury's gold certificates into bitcoin. In March 2025, Bo Hines, Executive Director of the Digital Asset Advisory Committee, further suggested revaluing the U.S. gold reserves at market price (currently accounted for at $42.22 per ounce) and using the appreciation to purchase bitcoin. Miles Suter, Head of Bitcoin Products at Block (Square’s parent company), stated that the feature is planned for broader testing later this year and a full rollout to all users in 2026, pending regulatory approval. The company said the initiative aims to build an “open, decentralized, and low-cost” payment system.

Trump Media & Technology Group (TMTG), partially owned by President Trump, has reversed its stance and confirmed it will raise $2.5 billion to purchase bitcoin, after previously denying reports about the deal. According to a company announcement released Tuesday, the funding includes $1.5 billion from a stock offering and $1 billion in zero-coupon secured convertible bonds. The transaction is expected to close on May 29. TMTG CEO Devin Nunes stated, “We view bitcoin as the premier tool for achieving financial freedom, and now Trump Media will make cryptocurrency a key component of our asset portfolio. This investment will help protect our company from harassment and discrimination by financial institutions.”

In other major news, Dubai has launched the MENA region’s first licensed tokenized real estate project, signaling the growing interest of one of the world’s emerging crypto hubs in real-world asset tokenization. According to an official announcement from the Dubai government, the project’s partners include the Dubai Land Department (DLD), the Central Bank of the UAE, and the Dubai Future Foundation. The tokens will be traded on the newly launched “Prypco Mint” platform, with Zand Digital Bank designated as the pilot phase banking partner. On May 19, the Dubai Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority (VARA) updated its regulations to include real-world asset tokenization (RWA), allowing such tokens to be traded on secondary markets.
