Ions in the air seek out small particles to attach themselves to which weighs the particles down causing them to eventually fall to the ground. Fresh rainfall causes ionization of the air which typically leads to that fresh rain smell we all find comforting. So a parallel could be drawn there... Being in ionized means you are free to float around and make things dirty and smelly, but then again not all particles in the air are stinky dirt... So we'll... Nevermind.
