Stablecoins are assumed safe, but history shows they wobble during crises. In 2025, the systemic risk of depegging remains underestimated. Even small deviations can amplify panic, particularly in DeFi protocols reliant on stable collateral. Liquidity crunches, regulatory shocks, or exchange failures could trigger temporary depegs. Although issuers have improved reserves and transparency, tail risks persist. Traders must factor in the probability that, during a black swan, stablecoins may not hold perfectly. Depegs may be short-lived, but their cascading effect on leverage and collateral makes them critical weak links in crypto market stability.
