Filippo Brunelleschi: Cosimo de' Medici directly supported Brunelleschi in completing the dome of Florence Cathedral (Santa Maria del Fiore), built between 1420 and 1436. This dome represents the pinnacle of Renaissance engineering: it was constructed without traditional flying buttresses, using a double-shell structure and innovative hoisting machines. Cosimo funded Brunelleschi's proposal in the 1418 competition, ensuring its victory. This not only solved a century-old architectural challenge but also symbolized Florence's ambition and technological revival. The dome became an iconic feature of the city's skyline and enhanced the Medici family's image as "guardians of the city."
