IMO UN resolution votes should be secret ballot. Each country can choose (and replace) their own representative, but once the choice is made, what the representative does is up to their own conscience. Less "pressuring" by great powers, more seeing how people really think.

More generally, perhaps a core theme of the next wave of democracy will be less "transparency and accountability" and more deliberate indirection and room for (pluralistic, aggregated) individual conscience. (this applies to DAOs too; eg. see NounsDAO https://aztec.network/blog/nounsdao-private-voting-final-update)

Several countries are paid and get a large part of their GDP for their UN votes. How would they be able to still do that if it was private?

The problem with the secret ballot is that you can also directly bribe the representatives and there is no consequences for it

Why would anyone care about the votes if they just represent some random dude's opinion and not the official stance of a nation?

I mean it's better this way, in democracy we trust people's choice of their rulers, so by revealing which country voted for/against any UN resolution show their leaders standing coincide with people motives or not, by this people also taking geopolitics as a measure when choosing thier favourite leaders.

You can easily bribe representatives with this type of voting process and everyone can also be in your pocket. Could be the highest bidder.

I don‘t like it because my country‘s representative should be accountable to me (the voter) so transparency on what they‘ve voted on generates that. But I see your point that secrecy could lead to better outcomes too. That said, offensive realism would suggest that a majority vote outcome anyways doesn‘t generate legitimacy

wouldn't a potential outcome of this be the dissolution of the UN, as great powers would see no benefit in participating in the organization?

Hey @vitalik.eth, take a look at our white paper at davinci.vote! We designed a zkRollup-based voting protocol that can solve most of these problems. When a voting is needed, we believe this protocol can meet all the criteria for a fair, accessible, anticoercion and censorship resistant participation.

Hey @vitalik.eth what do you think about replacing one half of the representative bicameral legislature with sortition? Give ordinary citizens a more direct say. Give the introverts a look in. Put a check on professional politicians (without entirely losing the skill sets that come with professionalisation).

The use case of smart contract is so limitless that even the wildest thinker of humanity can't fathom it out. Thanks for the Tech, the product from Etherium will outlive us all. Regarding the secret ballot, political world is a whole different world, power play is what rules there, not sensible or rightful actions are taken always but the powerful states what's right and sensible, most times to their benefits and to keep them in getting more power. That's the world we still live in.
