There’s a level of tech maturity that you could describe as “so useful they’ll use it even even if the creators are terrible people.” Too useful to cancel, the interesting version of too big to fail. You don’t *have* to be terrible of course. AI shot past the threshold in 2024. Crypto isn’t there yet, but many true believers think it’s already there and all we need to do is wait complacently for the world to realize it. Personally, I think we’re at the equivalent of the gpt2 stage of crypto. NFTs and DAOs were the deep dream stage. Stablecoins are like recommendation algorithms or machine translation. Useful but narrow early applications that worked early but weren’t world changing. We’re well short of the gpt3/chatgpt breakthrough moments. The invention gap is probably like 30%. There’s a tiny bunch of people working on getting the tech past that stage. In the meantime, we have to try not to be so terrible, the world decides to kill the tech before it becomes too useful to cancel.
