@vgr
Been on a 5 week 10k steps (~4.5mi on average given my stride length) streak through some bad winter and rain days. Usually at least 8-9k before 11 AM, often while on a zoom call (all my meetings are mornings, which I dislike but can’t change).
Stress test: For the past couple of weeks I’ve had something between a cold and a mild flu (maybe partially effective vaccine?). I’ve been able to keep up my 10k routine but it’s often the only thing I do that day.
10k steps, morning loaded, is extra valuable for getting sunlight, flushing out CO2 (my apartment is usually >1000 😩) and sleep regulation bonuses too. It’s also a good foundation to surge up to a walk-run or run if I’m feeling particularly spry.
I’ve always been a believer in raising the floor over raising the ceiling but this has been my first serious experiment with it. Raising the floor is the smallest improvement you can sustain indefinitely through a range of bad conditions.
Besides weather and illness, 10k steps also seems robust to bad moods due to lousy news killing creativity, project setbacks killing motivation, messy schedule days etc. It is materially, physiologically, and psychologically rugged floor raise. You can even doomscroll while 10k-ing.
The unit is also great (step) because small increments are legible and the arbitrary 10k target can be broken into improv chunks to fit almost any day. I like it much better than miles.
