Been thinking about the age-old question of tolerating the intolerant and other isomorphic conundrums.
In crypto land, I think this translates to the paradox of censoring for censorship resistance or more deeply, capturing for capture resistance.
I was reminded of a framework for thinking about this by an old friend Ilia, “plurality of absolutes” where he notes that there are two mindsets, which he calls Bright vs Free, that together can constitute a plurality of absolutes.
Well worth reading. It’s a kind of invisible hand model of moral markets, where individual self-righteousness can sometimes lead to emergent collective pluralism. But for it to work you need liquidity and moral markets-makers, which requires the right dynamic balance of frees and brights.
Applied to our ecologies, you can have a system that is overall capture-resistant even though individual nodes might be captured.
