Crypto _joined_ a cult more than it _is_ a cult
In bitcoin’s case it’s obvious which cult — it joined the zombie apocalypse libertarian ancap cult. Fortunately its technical and political vision is so restrictive, just digital gold, it can survive its ossification and serve that function despite its cult. Just like gold remains valuable despite the subculture of crackpot goldbugs.
In ethereum’s case, it’s not immediately obvious what the cult is, but “wagmi” is a decent pointer to it. Some mix of sloppy new-age neopagan mutualism, wooly-headed communitarianism, ersatz spirituality, and a sincere but on-the-nose altruistic impulse entirely lacking in subtlety or obliquity but harboring naive global ambitions. This cult couldn’t even rein in and prevail over its own degen casino element, so it’s understandable that the world didn’t take its grand save-the-world claims seriously.
