The recently popular x402 is an open payment protocol launched by Coinbase, built on top of the HTTP standard.
It leverages the previously unused HTTP status code “402 Payment Required” — which had existed for decades but was never widely adopted.
Now, through x402, this status code is being activated to enable a simple flow: “access a resource → make a payment → then receive it.”
