The polar night has begun in some parts of the state of Alaska in America, marking this year's polar night. The polar night usually occurs from mid-November until the end of January almost every year. During this period, the sun disappears and does not rise again until after about 60 to 66 days. There are times when a bit of sunlight can be seen for a few hours before it fades again — what they call “civil twilight. Polar night occurs in regions located in the far north and within the Arctic Circle, especially the city of Barrow, now known as Utqiaġvik. Countries located on the Arctic Circle also experience this phenomenon, such as Russia, Sweden, Norway, Canada, Denmark (Greenland), Alaska in the US, and the small country of Iceland. They also experience the “midnight sun,” meaning 24 hours of daylight for several days without any night at all — and even if there is “night,” it only lasts for a few minutes. This usually happens during the months of June and July.
