THE HIDDEN GIANT : UNDERSTANDING REINSURANCE
The reinsurance industry is one of the quiet backbones of the global financial system.
While it rarely makes headlines, it quietly absorbs risk that would otherwise collapse insurers, businesses, and even governments.
Every year, reinsurers collectively handle over $8 trillion in insured value,
about 8–9% of global GDP.
According to Swiss Re Institute’s 2024 report, the global reinsurance market surpassed $500 billion in annual premiums, and continues to grow as new climate, cyber, and geopolitical risks emerge.
But here’s the catch:
Despite its scale, access to this market is almost entirely closed to ordinary investors. Only a handful of giant institutions—Munich Re, Swiss Re, Berkshire Hathaway, and Lloyd’s syndicates, get to participate in this flow of capital and premiums.
