Although the role of the American app discord has been talked about in the Nepal protests, what has been missing is the role of the Chinese app Tik Tok.
Tik Tok was the only major social media app that was not banned by the government because it had registered and had set up a local representative. The nepo-baby trend that led to the protests spread over TikTok.
Young Nepalis copied the trend from similar videos from the Philippines and Indonesia. They also saw the Indonesian protests on TikTok and took on some of its symbols like the One Piece flag.
