What are the problems with hackathons?

They end. Money's paid out. Builders go home. Nothing else happens until the next hackathon.

From the ecosystem analyst perspective. For the sponsor it's an advertising cost. The only expectation I think is that ppl will recognize the brand after having a fun time at the hackathon. For the builder it's a networking event with the chance of a bonus that pays for the time and cost of the trip. I think both are getting what they want out of it, currently. That's why they are so popular! But I think there's a missed opportunity to utilize hackathons to be more evergreen and have the funds do more than just advertise.

Have also seen a focus on sponsor technology rather than problems to solve rarely inspires builders
