Two fun facts about Amsterdam:
1. Amsterdam has more bikes than people — Over 800,000 people live in the city, but there are estimated to be over 1 million bicycles! Cycling is the main way locals get around.
2. The city is built on wooden poles — Because the ground is so soft and swampy, most buildings (including the Royal Palace) stand on thousands of wooden foundation poles driven deep into the wet soil to stay stable.
