The @zama Confidential Blockchain Protocol aims to bring true transaction and state confidentiality to public blockchains through Fully Homomorphic Encryption (FHE). In this architecture, a network of specially selected node operators — the so-called genesis operators — plays a crucial role. Why is that so important? Firstly, because confidentiality requires not just encryption but trust in the infrastructure that handles the encrypted computation and key management. Zama’s design splits decryption keys among multiple parties and uses a network of coprocessors and KMS (Key Management Service) nodes to run FHE operations. By selecting highly reputable organisations for the genesis operator set, Zama bootstraps a level of security and credibility from day one: an operator with a large off-chain business value is unlikely to gamble its reputation by misbehaving.
