Plato’s greatest lesson hides in plain sight: If you are not willing to live like Socrates (poor, prone, and always questioning), you are not actually a “Philosopher” You may be philosophical; you may be friendly toward philosophy; you may admire philosophers. But mistaking yourself for a Philosopher can do a lot of harm to yourself, your city, and to real philosophy. (This is one of the big things that’s overlooked when people implicitly equate Plato’s Socrates with Plato.)

Calling myself a philosopher is too much ofc, but I am poor and always questioning. My friends call me philosopher, but I'm a bit more humble than that

I think the danger lies in believing the title exclude you from self examination rather than in calling yourself a philosopher

I love this line from Socrates: "By all means, marry; you will be happy if you get a good wife. If you get a bad one, you will become a philosopher."

Philosophy is not a way of life. Philosophy means love of knowledge. One can love and chase knowledge without necessarily crawling on the ground wearing rags. Socrates' poverty was the result of a conscious surrender to ignorance, a metaphorical return to a state of origin and poverty of knowledge that makes possible a more authentic approach to the world of ideas. Certainly many of Socrates' dialogues would not have taken notice had he not entertained himself with friends and lovers eating and drinking his fill. 😄

How is being poor a plus side for philosophers? If socrates tutored a few great minds, didn't he get some kind of compensation. Or he chose to stay poor.
