While I think Jake has a worthwhile concern, I want to offer a counterpoint: Humans have always had the ability to outsource our thinking to others — to the laws, the culture, the experts, the public opinion. The theme of most great political philosophy of the last 2500 years is how to exist as an independent thinker within the reality that most people knowingly or unknowingly outsource their thinking. (This is the root definition of the “the Liberal Arts” — to have liberty from other people’s opinions. I think AI’s tremendous powers change this fundamental human problem in degree, but it is not introducing a new kind of problem altogether. I am very confident that people who want to be free will always find a way to think for themselves.
