You describe my own experience well, but I genuinely wonder whether this is a sense that can be stronger in some than others. 

(For example like some might be better at spotting the difference in color gradients and others have perfect pitch)

Undoubtedly there will be a distribution for any given ability within a population (and the distribution is likely to be even more skewed if the population is heterogeneous)

That said, I would attribute the level of disconnection that exists now to cultural / societal issues like trauma suppression rather than natural distributions
