the way my mother talks about herself makes me feel sad then i wonder if my own approach to life is a retaliation, a deep will to "not be like that" are my actions, my desire to step into my own power and take control over my life, reactionary or innate?

That’s such a strong reflection. I’m probably around your mother’s age, and I think many of us grew up without much focus on self-esteem or emotional awareness. We were often told to just keep going and not ask too many questions — and that leaves a trace. t reminds me of something I once read: 'Peter is an alcoholic — yes, his father was too; that’s the example he grew up with. Peter is sober — yes, his father was an alcoholic, so he made other choices.' Sometimes we repeat what we saw, and sometimes we do the opposite — but either way, it shapes us.

Accept that she is an individual living an unique life experience. I understand your will to help her yet, she must do it for herself by herself. It is not easy to accept but it is what it is. What can you do? Succeed. Be happy, accomplish your goals, live a fulfilled life and guide her through your example. Then it won’t matter if reactionary or innate, but the results will talk for themselves. I wish you peace and joy 🙏🤝

i can only speak about my own similar circumstances and experiences, and i feel the more i try to not become like my mother the more i become. the only thing that has helped is trying to not Interpret it too much (super hard) i don't think its all black and white though, i believe its innate but at some percent reactionary but thats unavoidable i think, our experiences influence us to a degree

A lot of my life decisions came from not wanting to end up like my parents. Apparently it is very normal for second children to have this mentality. I can't complain - I am happy =)
