“Reducing an idea to practice” - making something physical - is what drives value. Once that happens, the researcher will rightly start to value their project more. Historically they will go raise money which will be $1M+ which puts it out of range for DAOs.

It is better for DAOs to be part of the inventive step such that they can control the project and leverage the DAO’s unique advantage of having a large group of passionate stakeholders.

Not much $ is needed to get started on the invention. Under $100K is doable especially since the goal is to leverage the researcher’s deep background to know what the simplest inventive step would look like.
