In ancient Rome, slavery was prevalent, with defeated peoples providing labor for the empire. Slaves lived in harsh conditions and had no rights, except for one unique exception. Fathers had the ability to sell or lease their sons as slaves, but only temporarily. Both parties would agree on a price and duration of slavery, with the understanding that the son would be returned in the same condition as received. However, there was a limitation on how many times a father could sell his son. Selling a child twice was permissible, but selling them a third time indicated a failure as a father. In such cases, the child would be legally freed from their parents. This rule of three sales applied to all children, and the father only needed to continue receiving income from them to continue making money.
