Ethereum contract devs: if we could 10x the gas limit but, to do so, we had to 10x the gas cost of CREATE, CREATE2 and SSTORE, would that still be a net improvement? Why or why not? IOW, if state growth is our main bottleneck to scale L1 gas, should we just fix it with pricing?

4-23-2025 ๐Ÿ’ป Long day in the office today and Pectra updates are out ๐ŸŽ‰ As mentioned in the official announcement, the recommendation for wallets implementing EIP-7702 is to use ERC-4337 bundlers for gas abstraction, batching, and validation.

In addition to this, Pectra introduces many other EIPs, including the long-awaited EIP-2537, which exposes BLS12-381 precompiles.

This upgrade also doubles (!) the average blob count on the network. This will help both existing and new L2s scale their Ethereum usage ASAP .oO ๐Ÿ˜„ Raising this limit was in part possible due to another EIP (7623), which bounds the worst-case block sizes on the network!

For stakers, Pectra introduces the ability to raise validators' effective balances. This means that small operators can compound their stake directly, while large ones can consolidate validators to reduce bandwidth use on the p2p network ๐Ÿค– It also removes the pre-merge PoW follow distance, shortening the delay to process validator deposits, and introduces execution-layer triggerable withdrawals, which enable more trustless staking constructions.

EIP-7702 allows standard Ethereum accounts (EOAs) to be extended with smart contract functionality, enabling use cases like transaction batching, gas sponsorship, or social recovery, all without migrating your assets ๐Ÿ”‘

I'll be chatting with @sreeramkannan about intersubjective consensus and other esoterica on the protocol town hall in 5 minutes. We'll try to get to the bottom of what the heck eigenlayer is, and why it matters. https://www.youtube.com/live/2OyZt4gbUNA?si=CPA3Ts9V2vbwwcJr
