@purp is stuck in the 1980s and thinks homeschoolers are mainly "religious zealots and off griders". This is a common stereotype of homeschooling families that is entirely inaccurate in 2026. He also thinks de-regulation of homeschooling will lead to poorly educated children.
The data tells a completely different story though.
-Homeschooling has gone mainstream in recent years, there were 3.7 million homeschooled students in 2024 and it is growing at an average rate of 4.9% a year.
-in the 2024/25 school year a third of reporting states had their highest homeschool enrollment numbers ever recorded.
-Only 23% of parents are homeschooling for religious reasons. People decide to homeschool for all kinds of reasons, including safety, special needs, dissatisfaction with public school quality, bullying, etc.
-The academic outperformance of homeschoolers has been consistent in lightly regulated and unregulated states. Homeschool students coming out of states with almost no regulations still outperform.
