First Principles refers to fundamentally re-understanding and solving problems by breaking them down to their most basic elements and avoiding relying on pre-existing assumptions or traditional knowledge. This approach of thinking has its roots in physics, especially the exploration of the fundamental laws of nature, but it is also widely used in a variety of fields, including business, engineering, and innovation.
In practical application, first principles require us to start from the most basic facts, put aside existing common sense and conventions, and rebuild a new framework of understanding. For example, when Elon Musk created Tesla's electric car, he used first principles to analyze the cost of batteries, believing that "batteries don't have to be expensive", and innovated production methods and reduced costs by reconstructing battery technology and starting from the most basic material costs.
