Did You Know?
Tortoises can live over 150 years, making them one of the longest-living animals on Earth. Some have been documented living past 180 years. That means a tortoise alive today could have been born before the invention of the telephone, the lightbulb, or the airplane.
But here's the wild part: they can hold their breath for hours, even though they breathe air. If they need to, tortoises can survive underwater for extended periods by slowing their metabolism drastically.
Also, their shells are part of their skeleton. It's not just armor they wear—it's fused to their spine and ribcage. So when you see a tortoise, you're literally looking at a walking, breathing piece of evolutionary history that's been perfecting the art of survival for millions of years.
Slow and steady really does win the race. 🐢
