We also must remember that we bought the DVD or CD, but that purchase gave us a license to play the movie or music, not to "own it". We basically bought a piece of plastic with a license. The best part? If the company disappears, you can still play it if you have the hardware. What would happen to all the digital stuff we are not archiving as a society?
Digital archiving is a real thing, especially for video games, where lots of old copies have been lost. Interestingly, the piracy of the games is achieving archiving thanks to the scene, which is at least the beauty of irony.
