there was more experimentation from DAOs w/ frames last year than w/ mini apps this year (e.g.: @botto, @vocdoni, @nouns prop house, @orangedao app). is this due to DAOs falling off a bit? or due to a frustrating frames experience that discouraged them from mini apps? something else? would love opinions (+ intros!)

We think that is a multifaceted problem, and many DAOs fail because their foundational principles are weak. For years, the ecosystem tried to build fully trustless orgs, but that model is set to fail, as it only fits a tiny subset of use cases (like Protocol DAOs). Most of the orgs rely on trust, leadership, and doocracy to function. That said, there’s still plenty of room for experimentation. We believe Farcaster has the potential to become a strong home for DAOs (and communities) by solving many recurring DAO challenges with things that are already built: enabling governance directly within the feed, supporting reputation systems and identity layers, offering notifications, and making discussion frictionless.

lots of daos are blowing up / unwinding due to bad governance and/or running out of capital

I think framesv1 lend themselves a lot better to voting-style experiences bc of the multiple buttons form factor, so it was a natural thing for people to build. mini apps provide opportunity for something much more hi fidelity and so devs don't necessarily gravitate to that DAOs have certainly fallen off since last cycle but not really any additional amount between framesv1 and mini apps, imo. exception being DegenDAO which was much bigger during degen / framesv1 hype and they were big public vocdoni users iirc

There is a much higher barrier to develop a mini app compared to a frame. Frames are much easier for devs because the client (warpcast) took care of the UI. While mini apps have more powerful features (which are awesome), the complexity is much higher and the effort involved is greater. The lower the barrier is to experimentation, the more experimentation will happen.

most DAOs either died or became very bureaucratic (downstream from complying with a very specific regulatory strategy). now, DAOs are recentralizing because of lack of regulatory pressure from the new SEC. I think we will have a new crop pop up following the "internet capital markets" experiments. people always start with capital formation, then realize they need coordination once they have money

Frames were a better experience for DAO features cause you could interact directly in the feed But we are keeping the Mini App tooling ready to support communities with purpose Hoping to see smaller groups coordinating more like bands than Fortune 500 companies

Dao's are doing fine (at least the ones that built good culture and didn't rely on trust/permissionless dogma and misaligned incentives). But the people in those dao's have been leaving Farcaster in droves. Those that are left have de-prioritized channels and pvp financial games to use. What's there to be excited about?

From what I remember, during the frame days, plenty of people had a good experience in terms of interactions. (E.G. @bottodao @botto did their voting rounds via the frame, succesfully for a while) Some ideas why they might not be jumping in (yet) Maybe mini apps take a bit more resources to get it done? Maybe not in reality, but that could be the impression?

DAOs are super messy right now. Many forgetting core principles around decentralization and the value of building community consensus. The point of joining DAOs for most members is participation. If DAOs are ruled by fiat or they close paths for contribution then why join?
