new study (disclaimer: not peer reviewed) found that chatbot use was associated with *greater* loneliness and reduced social interaction. don't think it's crazy that people will start paying for friends vs. paying for AI services to address this. sounds dystopian but if you consider how it's already happening then you realize it's surprisingly not. for example, in LA and NYC: - social clubs like SoHo House or Zero Bond; you have to pay - luxury wellness spaces like Hume or Othership; you have to pay - cool coworking spaces like Neuehouse or Malin; you have to pay - group activity apps like 222 or TimeLeft; you have to pay link to study: https://arxiv.org/html/2503.17473v1

"The study measures loneliness using the 8-item UCLA Loneliness Scale (ULS-8), which captures subjective feelings of social isolation and disconnection. Each item is rated on a 4-point Likert scale (1 = Never to 4 = Often), with higher scores indicating greater loneliness. Example items include "I lack companionship" and "I feel isolated from others"" the current state of AI lacks identity context, awareness of other people, and therefore cannot act as a connector/social experience given these metrics. it is literally an isolated experience

This post reminded me of something but I wasn't able to remember the name of the platform when I first saw your post. It just came to my mind again. There's a platform called "epal.gg", where you basically pay someone to play video games with you. No idea how much use it gets though (but I'm curious and would love to know ngl)

I don't think paying for social space access is "already happening" - it's been happening for a long time. Meeting at the bar, the coffeehouse, or a book and wine club - the number of social activities that don't have an implied or explicit monetary cost are far and few between.

If I’m mot mistaken none of those companies are profitable yet. I think. I do agree ‘professional social services’ will become more valuable but I don’t think it will be intentional. My health and wellness company relies on retention from the modern loneliness dilemma. We offer in-home massage, nutrition, chef prepared meal plans and most importantly personal trainer services. When I hire for PT’s I aim for empathetic and social over other hard skills, strictly for the social value since that is the true value we provide our clients. We have had linear growth and I don’t put that much effort into that business. So I expect other similar professional social services will grow in a similar fashion for that benefit of a paid friend.

Otherwise you have to find the underground free hubs that link to others... I was at one of these meetings today and they were talking about a new local ones starting called ROMEO, It had an acronym like "Retiree Only Meeting" I don't remember the rest. They have an outline for the first meeting and how many are in etc... This I just learned in the last Month or so Definitely interesting and I'm sure there will be plenty of scholarly literature coming soon enough

Interesting … Will take the time to read it Read another study where they found out an important % of regular users of AI (mainly text) reinforcing the belief AI reasoning (though process) was actually theirs. AI has definitely a psychological impact on people
