Today, we had the opportunity to speak in a class at Yoshinaga Daini Elementary School in Fuji City.
The theme was gender equality. Together with a female member of the Japan Self-Defense Forces, we talked with the students about the freedom to choose any career regardless of gender. The two-hour session went by so quickly—it was such a meaningful time.
We discussed stereotypes such as “women can’t become JSDF members,” and also how becoming a painter can still require a great deal of determination in today’s society, even for men. Through the class, we strongly felt the message that the city office staff truly wanted to share with the children from the heart.
We’ve been given opportunities like this before, but spending this time with the 6th graders—who are about to graduate—made today’s experience especially deep and memorable.
