Predicting when AI—specifically AGI (Artificial General Intelligence)—will become fully autonomous is challenging, like guessing the weather a decade ahead. AGI refers to a system capable of performing any intellectual task a human can, without needing constant instructions. We're not there yet, but the progress is intriguing. Currently, AI is narrow—designed for specific tasks with human-defined rules. For true autonomy, AGI would need to set its own goals, learn broadly without supervision, and adapt to unpredictable situations. Experts have differing views: some, like those at DeepMind or OpenAI, estimate it could take decades (2030s-2050s), while others—either optimistic or concerned—believe it could arrive sooner, possibly before 2030, if breakthroughs accelerate. Projects like xAI, aimed at speeding up scientific discovery, might push that timeline forward.
