many intellectuals deceive themselves in thinking that society should be managed by elites of some kind, regardless of the empirical principle that society is too diverse in too many complex circumstances for any intellect to dominate all facets of civilization.

so what do they do? 
they become ideologues

they embrace the luxury belief that decentralized capitalism is evil, that liberal democracy is inferior, and there are existential challenges that only they are knowledgeable about.

this ideahazard is instrumental to seeing everyone on the outside as uninformed and ignorant, that there can only be a binary between the evil banality of the past and the glorious new world beyond the messy, accidental present.
