Despite being the sixth largest italian city, most tourists come here only to visit the famous aquarium (second largest in Europe after Valencia Oceanographie). Instead it has one of the largest historical centres in Europe, now UNESCO site, due to its rich history as one of the fourth major sea republics (along with Venice, Pisa and Amalfi). The reason is that for many years it was considered the centre of naval industry in Italy and only in recent times tourism is strarting to develop.
