A 300-year-old institution doing something it has never done in its history: running a Dutch auction in ETH, starting at 20 ETH, no pounds or dollars anywhere in the process. The infrastructure is Art Blocks Engine, the same stack that powers Art Blocks curated and playground collections. Sotheby's does not just want to sell generative art. They want to sell it on-chain, with code-native sales mechanics. The inaugural artist is Vera Molnar, widely regarded as the first female digital artist. She began creating algorithmic compositions on early mainframes in the 1960s. @tylerhobbs traces his aesthetic lineage through her work. Dmitri Cherniak cites her as a direct influence on Ringers. The woman who helped invent generative art is now entering a fully on-chain minting pipeline built for the 2020s. The program will feature two to three generative artists per year. Sotheby's has been building toward this. They sold Cherniak's The Goose for $6.2 million in June, and the GRAILS collection from the 3AC liquidation brought in roughly $11 million total. But those were one-off sales of existing work. This program is different: a structured, annual commitment to living generative artists, with minting infrastructure built for the medium. @artblocks provides the engine. @highlight has its own version of this thesis, a platform that also launched on Ethereum this year. @ripcache has floated the idea that the Ethereum Foundation itself should establish a permanent on-chain art collection. The infrastructure conversation has moved past whether we should do this to how fast can we build it. A Dutch auction for generative art is a return to form. Art Blocks' earliest curated drops used Dutch auctions because they mirrored the generative process itself. Start high, let the algorithm find the price. Sotheby's adopting the same mechanic is not a gimmick. It is an acknowledgment that the sales format matters as much as the art format. You do not sell code-native work with gavel-and-paddle theater. Vera Molnar is in her nineties. The fact that her work, the foundational algorithmic compositions from the 1960s that helped start this whole tradition, is now entering a fully on-chain sales pipeline designed for contemporary generative artists says something about where the medium is heading. The pioneers are still being minted. The chain did not break the lineage. It extended it.
