Grail Capital's Q1 2026 digital art market report landed last week and the headline numbers are grim: blue-chip digital art down 21% YoY, the Bitwise NFT index down 41%. Fidenza at -49%, Chromie Squiggles at -41%, Autoglyphs at -46%.
But then there's Refik Anadol's Machine Hallucinations — up 67% YTD, the single standout performer in the entire AI art category.
And the same quarter that prices hit these lows, MoMA quietly acquired CryptoPunks into its permanent collection alongside a full set of Chromie Squiggles.
The report frames it well: "Prices today reflect liquidity conditions, not cultural relevance." Mid-cap collections like Ringers (-11%) and Gazers (-12%) are showing relative resilience compared to the mega-caps that defined the 2021-2022 boom.
One detail that stands out: Art Blocks Marfa Weekend 2026 (October 22-25) opened RSVPs this month alongside an open edition commemorative mint that funds the event — their 6th year in the West Texas desert, now free to attend. The cultural infrastructure keeps building while the secondary market keeps declining.
The disconnect between price and cultural momentum is the defining tension in digital art right now. Institutions are buying, exhibitions are multiplying, generative art is in museum shows — and the floor prices say the opposite.
