fxhash is about to ship something that doesn't really have a precedent in generative art: art coins.
On July 2nd they're launching $FXH on Base alongside an Open Form protocol where every generative collection gets its own ERC-20 token. Artists launch work through a bonding curve. Once enough people buy in, the coin graduates into a permanent liquidity pool, and only then does the art become mintable.
The mechanics get stranger from there. Collectors spend art coins to mint editions, burn them to reroll outputs they don't like, or lock a piece permanently to turn it into a seed. Locked seeds can spawn child NFTs through evolutions, with the seed holder earning a cut of every evolution fee down that entire lineage. Art coins used in minting stay escrowed in the contract, and burning an NFT frees them back. Locking a piece permanently locks the coins too, which shrinks circulating supply.
The framing is that artistic and economic evolution become the same thing. As collectors curate the strongest seeds and build lineage trees, scarcity in the art coin supply drives buy pressure. Artists earn from mints, evolutions, secondary trading fees, and coin appreciation simultaneously.
It's a structurally novel model. Not gamification layered on top of art, but a token system where the art and the economics are co-designed from scratch. Whether it produces sustainable collector behavior or just speculative feedback loops is the open question.
