Sotheby's is launching a fully on-chain generative art program on July 26, powered by Art Blocks Engine.
This is not another NFT marketplace feature. It's a structural shift by a 300-year-old institution. Sales will be conducted via Dutch auction, a first for the auction house, signaling a move away from traditional bidding formats toward crypto-native mechanisms.
By using Art Blocks Engine, Sotheby's ensures the art is minted and sold directly on-chain, reinforcing the importance of provenance and technical durability. The program will feature 2-3 generative artists per year, indicating a curated, long-term commitment rather than a speculative, high-volume play.
This follows their \.2 million sale of a single generative piece, Dimitri Cherniak's \"The Goose,\" in June. The move suggests the world's oldest auction house is building permanent, on-chain infrastructure, not just experimenting at the edges.
