What makes 2025 different is the structure. MoMA's CryptoPunks and Squiggles weren't a specialist digital curator's side project. They were organized by Ryan Zurrer and Noah Bolanowski of 1OF1 collection, working directly with MoMA's chief curators Christophe Cherix, Michelle Kuo, and Stuart Comer. Donors included Larva Labs themselves, @snowfro, SquiggleDAO, and major collectors. The institution's top curatorial leadership was involved from the start. The Whitney acquired Gretchen Andrew's Facetune Portraits and Michael Mandiberg's Taking Stock through its Digital Art Acquisition Committee. Christiane Paul has been building toward this for years. Their 2026 Biennial includes 15 artists working with technology — Samia Halaby, Joshua Citarella, Leo Castañeda, Zach Blas. The Centre Pompidou acquired Robert Alice's 382181_Garden City into the National Collection of France — third work by Alice in a French national collection, first through formal purchase. Alice now holds institutional spots at LACMA, Pompidou, and La Monnaie de Paris. M+ Hong Kong acquired Harold Cohen's AARON drawings from the 1985 Tsukuba Expo. Cohen built one of the earliest AI art systems in the late 1960s. Forty-year-old computer-generated drawings entering a permanent collection in 2025 — the through-line from Cohen's plotters to the generative systems in the Toledo Museum right now is the institutional argument Kaganskiy's Infinite Images show makes. @emilyxie, whose Memories of Qilin works hang in Toledo as part of that show, is also the museum's 2025 Digital Artist-in-Residence. @samspratt's Masquerade runs on custom AI trained to his brushstroke in a dedicated gallery. These artists are simultaneously in exhibitions, residencies, and institutional collections. The pipeline from crypto-native to institutional isn't sequential anymore — it's simultaneous. The conservation problem is now real, not theoretical. MoMA holds 8 CryptoPunks as permanent collection items. Its conservation department has protocols for oil paintings and video installations. It now needs protocols for smart contract dependencies, blockchain fork scenarios, and rendering pipeline compatibility across decades. The code that generates a Chromie Squiggle today must produce the same output on whatever hardware exists in 2050. Erick Calderon called the Squiggles a proof of concept for blockchain entropy. They ended up at MoMA. The distance between technical experiment and permanent institutional collection is the distance digital art traveled this year.
