Mostar, Bosnia & Herzegovina — Named after the bridge-keepers (mostari) who guarded the Stari Most — the magnificent 16th-century Ottoman bridge that arches over the turquoise Neretva River. Destroyed by shellfire in 1993 during the Balkan Wars, the bridge was rebuilt and reopened in 2004. Local divers still leap from its apex into the river below — a tradition of extraordinary courage and beauty.
