Paul Anderson’s The Master (2012) is a meditation on power, faith and the desire for belonging. The film explores the volatile relationship between Freddie Quell, a fractured WWII veteran and Lancaster Dodd, a charismatic leader of a new movement that bears a semblance to early Scientology.
Joaquin Phoenix delivers one of his most haunting performances as Freddie, embodying raw trauma and instinct. Philip Seymour Hoffman in turn, provides a masterclass in restraint and persuasion as Dodd, his booming voice and charming veneer masking a soft core. Amy Adams adds a chilling edge as Dodd’s wife, who fortifies the movement’s framework of influence from the shadows.
The film resists easy conclusions, leaving audiences unsettled about whether Freddie is healed, manipulated, or simply set adrift, again.
It's spellbinding cinema, dizzying even.
