The schooner America, representing the New York Yacht Club, raced against 14 of Britain’s best yachts in a regatta around the Isle of Wight. The British had been supremely confident—legend has it that Queen Victoria, upon hearing that the American boat was far ahead, asked who was in second place and received the reply:
“Your Majesty, there is no second.”
The victory stunned Britain’s yachting community and gave birth to the America’s Cup, which remains the oldest continuously contested international sporting trophy in the world. The win also symbolized America’s growing prowess on the global stage, not just in industry but in sport and innovation.
